Shelter in Place

  • A shelter in place order may be issued when it is safer to remain indoors than to evacuate. The Red Cross recommends selecting a small, interior room with few or no windows and taking shelter there.
  • A shelter in place warning may be issued for a variety of reasons, such as severe weather, hazardous materials exposure, suspicious intruder or any situation where it is best to stay where you are to avoid any uncertainty outside.
  • In general, you cannot be forced to shelter. However, there are circumstances when University officials will order that everyone stay in place for their own safety and well-being. It is important to consider sheltering in place in advance to avoid confusion.
  • Emergency officials may not immediately be able to provide information on what is happening and what you should do. However, everyone should be alert for instructions and updates as they become available through the University communications systems.
  • If class is in session, occupants should lock or barricade the door and remain in the classroom. In the residence halls, everyone should remain in their rooms and await further instructions.
  • Stay away from windows, doors and outside walls.
  • Keep everyone calm.

In Case of Intruder

  • Secure doors and seek concealment away from windows and doors. Turn lights off and close the blinds if this can be done safely.
  • Account for all faculty, staff, students and visitors.
  • Stay in your location until the danger has passed and the all clear is given by emergency officials.
  • The all clear message will be broadcast via the University emergency communication systems when the danger has passed and the appropriate officials have determined it is safe.
