Audition Requirements

Please locate the particular audition requirements for your performance area, under the type of degree for which you are auditioning. Bachelor of Music degrees have different audition requirements than the Bachelor of Arts in music and music minor.Ìý

Voice

Voice:Ìýone aria and two contrasting art songs (all memorized, two in different foreign languages); pianist provided for on-campus auditions, CD player provided if recorded accompaniment is preferred.

Orchestral Strings, Harp, Classical Guitar

Orchestral Strings (For Scholarship):Ìýa major scale (three octaves) and melodic minor scale (2 or 3 octaves); two contrasting etudes or two contrasting movements of a solo sonata or concerto. Unaccompanied pieces of rigor (Bach Sonatas and Partitas,ÌýPopperÌýEtudes etc.) are acceptable and encouraged for higher scholarship consideration.

Orchestral Strings (For Admission): major scale (at least two octaves); one etude or one movement of a solo sonata or concerto

Harp:Ìýarpeggios (four octaves) in fluent tempo; one etude of Grandjany, Bochsa, Larivière, Salzedo or Pozzoli; one standard harp solo work originally written for harp

Classical Guitar:Ìýon a nylon-string classical guitar, perform major and minor scales; one standard classical guitar solo work; one classical guitar etude

Piano:Ìýthree contrasting pieces from three of the following categories: a work from the Baroque period (for example, a prelude and fugue from the Well-Tempered Clavier by J.S. Bach or a sonata by D. Scarlatti); a movement from a classical sonata or concerto (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven); a 19th-century piece (Schubert, Mendelssohn, Liszt, Chopin, Brahms, Schumann, etc.); an Impressionistic piece (Debussy or Ravel) or representative 20th-century piece

Contemporary Styles (Jazz/Pop/World)

Electric Guitar (Contemporary Guitar):Ìýperform all major and natural minor scales (two octaves); simple solo chord/melody arrangement (1-2 minutes) for a jazz standard; melody and comping (playing chords) for a 12-bar blues standard

Keyboard/Synthesizer (Contemporary Keyboard):Ìýperform all major and natural minor scales (two octaves); right-hand comping (playing chords) and left-hand walking bass over a circle of fifths progression; right-hand melody and left-hand comping for a 12-bar blues standard

Electric Bass (Contemporary Bass):Ìýperform all major and natural minor scales (two octaves); melody and walking bass line for a 12-bar blues standard; a prepared solo for electric or upright bass in a style of your choice

Drum Set (Contemporary Percussion):Ìýperform accompaniment patterns in several different styles: jazz, latin, rock, funk, reggae, etc.; perform a prepared, unaccompanied solo in a style of your choice
