Program Details

Majors

Actuarial Science —ÌýThe actuarial science major prepares students for careers as actuaries, who assess risk and operate in a variety of insurance, financial and consulting environments.

Data Science –ÌýThe data science major equips students with the skills to handle intricate data through the utilization of machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, mathematical modeling, and programming languages such as R and Python. Data science majors will acquire expertise in data acquisition, analysis, model building, and effective communication of insights and outcomes, enabling them to creatively convey valuable information to assist businesses in making well-informed decisions.

Mathematics — The mathematics major focuses on the most significant branches of mathematics, including real analysis, abstract algebra and finite mathematics, and provides a program that gives students a balanced view of pure and applied aspects of modern mathematics.

Mathematics with Computer Science — The mathematics with computer science major provides a blend of mathematics and computer science. In addition to acquiring a solid mathematical background, mathematical programming students also study applications through courses in business, economics and computer languages.

Having a passion for problem-solving and analysis, mathematicians are essential to the world for their ability to interpret facts, figures and numbers to communicate solutions for everyday challenges.

Through analysis, mathematicians apply theories and techniques to solve practical problems in business, engineering, the sciences and other fields. Through thorough research, mathematicians can carefully examine data and communicate to technical and non-technical audiences.

Mathematicians find work in any field that benefits from data analysis, including government, education, healthcare, development and research. Mathematicians use their knowledge and findings to influence policy reform, increase awareness, identify trends and improve conditions through problem-solving.

Student Organizations

The Math Club meets a few times a month from September through May, and membership is open to all students. The club provides opportunities for students to socialize, network, share ideas and learn new concepts. The club frequently plays math games, engages in problem solving sessions, enjoys guest lectures on topics such as origami and fractals, and more. Additionally, members learn about careers in math, undergraduate research opportunities and local conferences.

The Pi Mu Epsilon Mathematics Honor Society is a mathematics society consisting of chapters at approved institutions of learning. Its purpose is to promote scholarly activity in mathematics among students. Members are elected on an honorary basis according to their proficiency in mathematics and engage in activities designed to promote mathematical and scholarly development.

The Actuarial Science Club seeks to prepare and create an environment for aspiring actuaries to learn more about the profession and prepare for a career in the actuarial field. The club works with student at ÂÌÅ«Ì컨°å to guide them through the coursework and the process for actuarial exams. The club provides available resources to help students more effectively study for actuarial exams.

The mission of the Data Science Club at ÂÌÅ«Ì컨°å (DSÂÌÅ«Ì컨°å) is to provide students with an opportunity to explore the field of data science, to develop their skills and knowledge, and to foster a community of learners. We believe that by engaging in hands-on learning experiences, our members will gain a deeper appreciation for the power and potential of data science to solve real-world problems. Our vision is to create a dynamic and inclusive community of learners who are passionate about using data science to make a positive impact on the world.

Math Competitions

The ÂÌÅ«Ì컨°å Integration Competition is an annual competition among ÂÌÅ«Ì컨°å students to solve tough integration problems. This activity motivates students to learn more about integration and to develop problem-solving skills in a limited time.

The William Lowell Putnam Exam is a prestigious mathematics competition for undergraduate students in North America. The exam is administered by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) and is widely regarded as one of the most challenging undergraduate level math competitions in the world. The exam consists of two, three-hour sessions, held in December every year. During each session, participants attempt to solve six mathematical problems. These problems are designed to be exceptionally difficult and often require deep insight and creative problem-solving skills.
