Financial Aid for Part-Time Undergrads

The following types of assistance are available for undergraduate part-time students.

Federal Grants

To be eligible for any federal Title IV financial aid, a student must complete theÌýÌýfor each academic year that he or she attends school.

Pell Grant

This federal grant is awarded on the basis of need and the cost of the individual institution. The maximum award is $6,195 for theÌý2019-2020 aid year. Pell Grants are available to students enrolled for at least three credits per semester.

Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant

Graduates and undergraduates currently enrolled in teacher certification program are eligible to receive theÌý. Students must file the FAFSA to receive the grant, though it is not considered need-based financial aid, and must teach in a high-need area at a high-need school for four years within eight years of program completion. If the student does not meet this teaching requirement, the grant converts to an unsubsidized Direct Loan with interest accrued. This grant may be prorated based on the student's level of enrollment.

Federal Loans

Federal Direct loansÌýare available to U.S. citizens and permanent residents of the U.S. only. Students must be registered for a minimum of six credit hours per semester. A completedÌýÌýand a Loan Promissory Note are required.Ìý

Florida Bright Futures Scholarships

This umbrella program offers three lottery-funded scholarships to rewardÌýFlorida high school graduatesÌýwho demonstrate high academic achievement and enroll in an eligible Florida post-secondary educational institution within three years of graduation.

Continuing Studies Scholarships

The Office of Graduate and Continuing Studies offers scholarships to continuing studies students. Criteria for the awards are admission to ÂÌÅ«Ì컨°å's Continuing Studies student program, high academic performance or potential, and financial need. Students who wish to apply for these scholarships should contact the Financial Aid OfficeÌý(finaid@ut.edu) and complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) atÌýÌýApplication deadline for the fall semester is August 1 and for spring semester is December 1. Students are required to submit an essay (500-700 words) discussing their academic achievements, career goals and reasons for the financial need. Please email the essay toÌýfinaid@ut.edu.

Veterans Benefits

VeteransÌýand children of deceased or disabled veterans may be eligible for education benefits from the Veterans Administration. Contact the local VA Office for more information. TheÌýveterans benefitsÌýon-campus representative is located in theÌýRegistrar's Office, Plant Hall Room 90, (813) 253-6251.

Tax Credit

Taxpayers may be eligible to claim a nonrefundable American Opportunity credit against their federal income taxes. The American OpportunityÌýcredit may be claimed for the qualified tuition and related expenses of each student in the taxpayer's family who is enrolled at least half time in a program leading to a degree. The maximum credit a taxpayer may claim is $2,500 for each student in the family who meets enrollment criteria for families earning up to $180,000.
